Building ecologically, with respect for the forest
Solid timber construction that is not only strong — but also does good.
At Solid Wood Builds we believe that building need not come at the expense of nature. On the contrary: our oak-framed garden buildings and solid timber structures are designed to last for generations and to remain in harmony with the environment they come from.
We choose exclusively solid oak, pine or Douglas fir of PEFC-certified origin — a guarantee that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests where ecological, social and economic values go hand in hand.
PEFC: Certified sustainable
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is the largest forest-certification system in the world and recognises sustainable forest management. This means:
- Preventing deforestation: Forests are preserved and managed sustainably.
- Material from renewable sources: Wood comes from responsibly harvested forests.
- Maintaining and improving biodiversity: Protection of ecologically valuable areas and rare animal and plant species.
- CO₂ storage: Sustainably managed forests continue to capture and store CO₂.
- Protection of ecologically valuable areas: Preserving habitats for diverse flora and fauna.
- Social responsibility: Employment for local people and protection of the rights of (indigenous) communities.
Thanks to this approach, the forest stays healthy, resilient and full of life — for future generations too.
Forest Wildlife: Life in Balance
Sustainable forest management also means protecting the animals that live there. The forests we source our wood from are home to numerous protected species, such as:
- Black stork: The largest forest bird in France, which winters in Africa. This protected species is one of the symbols of biodiversity.
- Wildcat: A rare and shy inhabitant of European forests.
- Red deer, roe deer and wild boar: Important species for the ecological balance of the forest.
By choosing PEFC-certified wood, you help preserve these species and their habitats.
Craftsmanship in Balance with the Landscape
Our appreciation for the forest does not stop at felling. Much of our wood is still extracted the traditional way, using draught horses — a technique that replaces heavy machinery and so spares the forest floor, young saplings and ecosystems.
This artisanal approach has become rare, but that is precisely what makes it so valuable. It reflects a deep care for the balance of the forest and a respect for centuries-old craftsmanship.
Partnership with the ONF in France
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond wood selection. We work with the French Office National des Forêts (ONF), responsible for managing around 10 million hectares of state forests in France.
The ONF safeguards biodiversity, protects endangered species and manages biological reserves such as the Forêt de Tronçais, a home to countless animal species.
When you choose an oak-framed garden building from Solid Wood Builds, you know your project is built with wood from forests where every tree has been selected with care, sound policy and a long-term vision.
Sustainable building = mindful building
Ecological building is not only about materials — it is about choices.
We deliberately choose wood that requires little energy to produce, stores CO₂ rather than emitting it, and is biodegradable at the end of its life.
We choose:
- Local production of oak-framed garden buildings in our own workshop
- Solar panels for environmentally conscious energy use
- Minimal waste through precision work with CNC machines
- Full use of every part of the trunk
- Solid timber structures that last for decades
Choosing Solid Wood Builds means choosing the future
By building with wood from sustainably managed forests, with respect for the craft and the natural cycle, you contribute to a liveable future. For yourself. For your children. And for the forest.
