Timber fence calculator: bays and post positions

Enter each straight fence run and the maximum centre-to-centre post spacing confirmed for your chosen product. Split at gates and corners; exclude gate openings. This tool estimates positions, not a final material order.

Use a dot or comma for decimals. No units or thousands separators. Rail length is not automatically the permitted post spacing.

The calculator does not submit or save your measurements.

How to calculate fence bays and posts

Divide each run length by the confirmed maximum spacing, round up to whole bays, then add one post position per run. Example only: 25 m at an assumed 2.5 m spacing gives 10 bays and 11 positions; a separate 6 m run gives 3 bays and 4 positions. Together: 13 bays and 15 positions before checking shared corners. The example spacing is not a product specification.

From layout to the right order

  • Mark end, corner and gate posts on a sketch. Shared corners may require a different post or connection.
  • Check rails separately: usable span and connections determine quantities. A rail can span several bays; the bay count is not a rail shopping list.
  • Confirm ground conditions, slopes and intended use. This tool does not determine structural spacing, installation depth or suitability for your animals.
  • Send the sketch, preferred oak or pine model, gate openings and delivery postcode. Confirm components and buying units before ordering.
