How to budget for a timber garden building

The price of a timber structure and the cost of a finished garden building answer different questions. Start with the model you want, then list what is needed to make it ready for your intended use.

Compare like for like

Open the models you are considering and compare the same dimensions, timber type, finish and selected options. A smaller frame or a different supply scope can explain a price difference more than the wood alone. Use the current product configuration, rather than a category starting price, for your comparison.

Our wood types page explains oak, Douglas fir and pine. Compare the oak, Douglas fir and pine garden buildings against the same brief; availability and options belong to the individual product.

Separate the budget into clear parts

  • Timber structure: record the exact model, dimensions and selected wood and finish.
  • Preparation and foundations: allow for the work your location and design require. Ask the relevant professional to assess the ground and support details.
  • Roof and enclosure: list your intended roof covering, rainwater drainage, walls, doors and windows. Check which, if any, are included in the offer.
  • Assembly and handling: decide who will assemble the building and discuss access, equipment and any professional labour required.
  • Finishing and use: include flooring, treatment, lighting or other items needed for your chosen purpose, where applicable.
  • Delivery: check the charge for the delivery address and discuss any access restrictions before ordering.

This is a planning checklist, not a list of standard inclusions. Read the kit information and ask us to confirm the specific supply scope for your selected product or quotation.

Use a simple comparison sheet

Make one column for each proposed configuration and one row for each budget item above. Mark each item as included, separately priced, not required or still to confirm. Keep VAT treatment consistent between quotations. Leave unresolved items visible instead of treating them as zero cost.

For example, an open seating area and an enclosed room of the same footprint need different finishing decisions. Choose the intended use first, then compare offers for that use. The dimensions and layout guide helps you prepare that brief.

Delivery is based on the destination

You can order through any of our language sites. Check our delivery information and the calculated delivery charge at checkout; the delivery address matters, not the language of the shop. UK delivery requires a price on request. Share the postcode and access details when requesting a quotation.

Standard model or made to measure?

A standard model is a useful starting point when its plan matches your space. If openings, dimensions or the layout need to change, send a marked-up sketch for a made-to-measure enquiry before ordering. Do not assume an unlisted alteration is included.
